Leaders debate: Keir Starmer says Tories ‘in no place to lecture anybody on tax’

Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer are dealing with questions from Sky Information political editor Beth Rigby and members of the viewers at Grimsby City Corridor.

Keir Starmer has been grilled first by Rigby who centered on Labour’s tax plans. 

Keir Starmer hit again at being pushed on Labour’s stance on taxes as he mentioned his occasion “won’t elevate taxes on working individuals” including that the manifesto shall be a “plan for wealth creation”.

Starmer instructed the interviewer: “You might be pushing me again and again on tax, I feel individuals are taxed an excessive amount of. I’m not going to apologise for that”.

When instructed by Rigby that the Tories have mentioned Labour will elevate taxes, Starmer hit again “initially, the Tories are in no place to lecture anybody about tax rises” which obtained a wave of applause from the viewers. 

He went on “We’ve received the very best tax burden for 70 years”.

It’s the second time they’re being grilled forward of the final election, with the final debate seeing the leaders conflict over NHS ready lists and the Tories Nationwide Service proposal. 

Previous to the controversy, Sunak instructed Sky Information he was “pumped” and looking out ahead to it whereas Starmer mentioned “I understand how essential preparation is while you’re interviewed by Beth Rigby.”
