R.B. Morris, singer-songwriter and poet, to play at White Water on Sunday

R.B. MORRIS
SUNDAY 1/22. White Water Tavern. 5 p.m. $10.

A number of songwriters name themselves poets, however R.B. Morris is the true deal. Topped Knoxville, Tennessee’s first poet laureate in 2016, the cleverly economical lyrics accompanying his sleepy people melodies and slow-motion pedal metal really feel like a correct extension of his verse. In “Purple Sky,” a minimize off his 2020 solo album, he recounts peculiar but acquainted regrets: “I want I had a candy kiss for each step I took, I want I had my finest ideas all down in some e book.” In “Outdated Copper Penny,” he likens himself to a one-cent coin, and the metaphorical potential feels limitless: “I’m heads up, I’m completely happy, I’m able to roll. I do know I’m not silver, I do know I’m not gold. However I’m good luck to whoever holds an outdated copper penny like me.” Along with his songs and poems, Morris is a James Agee-obsessive, and has written and held the lead position in a play about his life. Hopefully when he involves the White Water, a few of this peripheral experience will trickle into his stage banter or present up on the merch desk.
