When Opera within the Rock introduced its 2022-2023 program, CEO Fred Owens claimed it could be “the only opera company in the United States dedicating its entire season to build[ing] the Black experience.” In step with that imaginative and prescient, their subsequent efficiency is “Divas within the Rock,” a two-night-only live performance at The Corridor that traces your complete profession of Whitney Houston. Probably the most revered vocal powerhouses ever, Houston is thought for songs so universally beloved and timeless that it feels a bit ridiculous to kind them out (“I Will All the time Love You,” “I Wanna Dance With Someone (Who Loves Me),” and so forth.).
“The concept for the present was to showcase Whitney’s total musical capability…[including] the place she began,” mentioned Little Rock’s Nicky Parrish, the occasion’s musical director and featured vocalist, in a Zoom interview. “Lots of people once they do a tribute don’t actually hit on the gospel a part of her. To not give the entire present away however … the start of this present goes to shock some individuals.” Along with Parrish — whose voice was referred to as “a uncooked reward … that comes from God” by Gladys Knight — singing duties shall be shared by Adrianne Collins, Crissy P., Nia Renee and NaJe.
